The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) provides the National Fire Department Registry in order to collection information oin fire departments for both policy making and communications purposes. Here are some quick facts from the fire department data.
Responserack has reorganized this fire service information so you can now learn about fire departments within your county. How does your fire department compare to its neighbors?
The USFA categorizes fire departments as “volunteer”, “mostly volunteer”, “mostly career” and “career”.
Has your fire department, or fire departments in your area, moved from “volunteer” to “mostly volunteer”, perhaps with a paid chief? Is your fire department “career” or even “mostly career”? How is your county organizing its fire service these days?

Fire Departments report their numbers of firefighter numbers to the USFA. Information might be somewhat out of date (i.e. maybe not all fire departments update every year) and firefighter numbers fluctuate regularly, however a county average allows you to get a sense of how recruitment and retention is performing in your area.
