NFIRS code lists can be overwhelming, with many choices to select from. Further, there is often little or no feedback on if you have selected the correct code. How do you ensure that you’ve selected the best code to make your contribution to NFIRS data
Selection Process
Follow this method for selecting the best NFIRS code:
- Start by selecting the correct group
- Select the lower group (lower number) when multiple are appropriate
- Look for the precise value within that group
- If there are choices, again, select the lower number
- Use “other” when appropriate, and nothing else fits

When reviewing codes list, look for the groups:
