Core Fire Department Specification

The NERIS incident hazard module specification details the hazardous situation information.

 
 

Data Framework

The data framework provides fields and definitions for the data.

General

  • dot_hazard_classification - The Department of Transportation Hazard Classication
  • chemical_name - The name of the chemical involved in the incident
  • container_type - Tank Car, Portable Tank, etc.
  • container_capacity - The container capacity by volume or weight
  • capacity_units - The unit of measurement of the container capacity
  • estimated_amount_released - IF released, the estimated amount released by volume or weight
  • estimated_amount_units - The unit of measurement of the estiamted amount released
  • physical_state - IF released, the physical state of the chemical
  • released_from - IF released, the location from which the release occurred  
     

Population

  • population_density - The categorical population density of the surrounding area
  • area_affected - The area affected by the incident
  • area_affected_units - The unit of measurement of the area affected
  • area_evacuated - The area evacuated during the incident
  • area_evacuated_units - The unit of measurement of the area evacuated
  • estimated_people_evacuated - The estimated number of people evacuated during the incident
  • estimated_buildings_evacuated - The estimated number of buildings evacuated during the incident  
     

Release response

  • cause_of_release - The cause of the hazmat release
  • release_factors - The factors contributing to the hazmat release
  • mitigation_factors - The factors or impediments that affected the mitigation of the incident
  • equipment_involved - Equipment involved in the hazmat release
  • hazmat_disposition - The outcome of the Hazmat Incident  
     

If in structure, fire protection

  • property_floor_of_origin - The story above or below ground of fire origin
  • detector_presence - Describes whether a detector was present in the area of the fire
  • detector_type - If a detector was present, describes the type of detector located
  • detector_power_supply - If a detector was present, describes the power supply of the detector
  • displaced_occupants - Describes the total number of occupants displaced
  • displaced_number - Describes the total number of occupants displaced
  • displaced_cause - Cause for displacement  
     

Rescues

  • civilian_rescues - The number of civilians rescues during the incident
  • civilian_evac - The number of civilians evacuated or assisted out of non-IDLH areas during the incident.
  • ff_rescues - The number of firefighters rescued from IDLH environments during the incident.
  • pet_rescues - The number of pets rescued from IDLH environments during the incident.

Rescues

civilian_rescues The number of civilians rescues during the incident Rescue is removal of viable/potentially viable occupant from IDLH to point of additional care where firefighters are under direct threat to bodily harm, including death. Yes
civilian_evac The number of civilians evacuated or assisted out of non-IDLH areas during the incident. Evacuation is the removal of occupants from non-IDLH areas, including non-attached and attached adjacent exposures by firefighters. Yes
ff_rescues The number of firefighters rescued from IDLH environments during the incident. Rescue of a firefighter is the removal of a member from IDLH to the point additional care can be provided. If this is one or greater than it must also be reflected in core_module line 10 Yes
pet_rescues The number of pets rescued from IDLH environments during the incident. Rescue of a pet involves the removal of a viable/potentially viable animal designed for human companionship from inside a structure in an IDLH. Yes
